Fishing in Bangkok, Thailand :- Part 4 – IT Monster Lake

This is the easiest part of this report. This is how i ‘Romance the Dragon’!!!!!

So, i think now i am qualified to for the Tasik Kenyir Araipaima Challenge…..

quote:

Foreign animal danger to our habitats

The Menteri Besar of Terengganu has issued a challenge by offering a RM10,000 reward to whoever catches the Araipaima Gigas (or dragonfish) in Tasik Kenyir, so as to reduce its population. This underscores the gravity of the issue of invasion of foreign species.
Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) is highly concerned that alien fish species are being dumped into our waterways, threatening the lives of indigenous fish species.

Link :- http://www.mmail.com.my/content/7831-foreign-animal-danger-our-habitats

But pity, the reward is only a mere Rm10,000. Hiring a professional like me cost more than that. Besides the cash reward, i would require a lot of beers and whiskey to be provided too. EK would agree with me on this…..
And besides, i don’t think these gentle dragon would threaten the lives of any indigenous fish species…..

The moment of joy for every angler is to catch one of their dream fish. My dream already came true and that is why i can retire from fishing but once John get to know that i am retiring from fishing, he showed me these photos….

OUCH!!! I hate you John!!! Why must you torture me like that??? Why can’t you just let an oldman retire peacefully???
Anyway, to cut a long story short, i am going back to Bangkok on 1st of March with fish4fun(Kenny) to get this fish, then i can retire from fishing peacefully!!!

Ok, back to IT Monster Lake. Like what fish4fun said, if you wanna fish at this pond, make sure you bring lots of spare cloths because you need to jump into the lake to take photo with your dreamfish. They do not allowed you to bring this fish on land. The moment this araipaima was in the safe cage, i jumped into the lake and start molesting it till the fish handler came over and speak some Thai language to me which the Thai Fishing Guide translated it as “That is a araipaima, not a hooker on Patpong street”….hahaa……
After i molest enough, i climb back up to shore and went and took a bath, change my cloth and continue fishing. This is something that you must NOT do if you are feeling lucky that day!!! Or else, no matter how many spare cloths you bring also not enough. The moment i took a bath, changed my clothing and cast out my bait, my reel went…..”STRRREEEEEEEEEEETTTTTT” again!!! I leggo 2 meter of line and the fish is still pulling and i strike!!! It’s a hook on again!!! OMG, this fish fight like a anaconda too and it swirl in circle of ‘S’ with constant knocking on my line. It swam across the lake taking out my line like i hooked on a MRT train. This fish does not allow me to retrieve line and it keep pulling and pulling. After about 10 minutes of tugging my line out, i sense it’s slowing down and this is when i slowly pump it back. Once it’s near, it swam up and make an aerobatic turn and showed its body and the Thai Fishing Guide shouted….”It’s an Araipaima again”!!!!….the Thai Fishing Guide kept on saying, “You are very lucky KK”,…”You are very lucky KK”…”Second araipaima on a row!!!!!!!!

I again fought this fish for about 20 minutes before it decides to give up!!! Wooaahh, what a fight!!!

YEAAAAHHHHH!!! I caught 2 Araipaima Gigas on a row!!!

So i took off my cap…

Show my usual hand gesture ‘trademark’…and……

…and start kissing the fish!!!…*muakks, muakkss*……..

I caught a “Seong Lung” aka ‘Double Dragon’ in 2010!!! Talk about luck!!! Ain’t i lucky!!! Wooaaahhhhh!!!! 2010 Year of the Tiger??? Tiger also must give way to ‘Double Dragon’!!!…hahahaaa…….

Fishing in Bangkok, Thailand : Part 3 – IT Monster Lake

IT(pronouce as ‘It’, not I.T) Monster Lake is a paypond that housed many amazing fishes. This lake belongs to a Mr It Khun, a sugar refinery boss who loves fishing himself. In the beginning, Mr It would import all sort of fishes from Amazon River, Chao Praya River, Mekong River etc. Fishes like araipaima, Chao Praya Catfish, Red Tail Tiger Catfish and carps, like the famous Temoleh, big head carps, rohu etc to put in his lake and he would invite some of his close angler friends over to fish them. Only lately he decides to open this monster lake to public with a minimum charge(3500bath per rod).
From my observation, Mr It does not make any profit at all from the charges he collected from anglers(only 2 anglers were fishing at the lake, me and an Irish) as he would need to pay for the maintenance cost and also the cost for feeding those monster fish every evening in his lake. Mr It feeds his monster fish with live tilapia which is not cheap. This is the reason why his monster fish are always healthy and strong.

Truck loads of Tilapia being fed to the monster fish every evening

Lots of monster fish will congregated at this area during feeding time. This would be the best time to lure for moster fish….

Thanks to Mr It, now we don’t have to travel to the Amazon river to fish for amazonian fishes like the araipaima. Although according to John, not every angler would be the lucky one to get the araipaima. According to him, some anglers had repeated trips before they successfully hook on an araipaima. There’re about 100 araipaimas ranging from 20 to 100 kgs in Mr It lake.

After a good night rest, 1 started my journey from Rachana to Ratchaburi at about 3am Thailand time where the IT monster Lake is located. John came with a Cab to fetch me there. He did not drive his SUV this time because we are suppose to stay one nite at Ratchaburi and heads to Sri Nakarin Dam at Kanchanaburi for Wild Toman and Sebarau fishing the next morning with Mr Pipom 4X4. Mr Pipom is a pro lurer from Thailand who also owns a paypond near Boon Ma Barramundi Farm.

We reached IT Monster Lake at about 6.00 am in the morning. After some preparation, we begin fishing at about 6.30am. John had advice me to take the ‘Lure Package’(you are allowed to use hong/dedak) which an angler must use lure or dedak/hong fishing from 6am to 2pm then switch to ‘bait fishing’ from 2pm to 6pm, a solid 12 hour fishing for 3500bath. If an angler prefer to only use ‘bait fishing’(Bait Fishing Package), the charges would double which is 7000bath for 12 hour fishing.

I started luring with my 14 footer Shimano Surfcasting Rod….

I casted for about an hour with this Thailand Handcrafted Lure……

Actually this Pacu was the first fish on my Surfcasting Rod instead of the Red Tail Tiger i posted earlier to make Okie drool…hehee……

Then i continue luring for another hour with my Surfcasting Rod before i switch to my lure casting rod…..

Suddenly, something took my lure and….sttrreeeettttttttt…..i strike and it’s hook on!!! This fish runs like a Port Klang Kurau, it’s powerful and fast!!!

It’s a Red tail Tiger, a cross breed between a Stripe Tiger Catfish and a Red tail Catfish….

Just before lunch time, few more pacus took my lure. I tested a few lures here but it’s proven once again, the Thailand Handcrafted lure work the best….

Lunch was simple, just a fried rice and kopi peng…..

After Lunch, i continue casting and a Chao Praya Catfish took my lure. Notice a black dot near the gill area(my finger covering the black mark)??? That’s the Choa Praya Cats trademark, if don’t have that mark, it would be a plabuk…..

It’s 2pm now and we are allowed to use ‘bait’ for fishing(after 2pm, you are allowed to use bait, lure or hong/dedak). Just take a guess what bait we’re gonna use for all this freshwater monster fish? I wouldn’t have guess it correctly if i didn’t see it with my own eyes….

Anyway, the Thai Fishing Guide had bought some of the ‘bait’ earlier on and had it cut into smaller pieces for fishing and ‘charming’. This is the 4th day i’ve fished with him and i’ve know better than to question his action. The ‘magical bait’ that he used works wonder. Withing the first half hour we used his ‘magical bait’, i already hook up a Red Tail Tiger….

The Thai Fishing Guide showed me the correct way to ’strike’ at this pond. He says, “KK, you must leggo about 2 meter of line out first and wait for the fish to run before you strike”. I followed his instruction and true enough, the fish that took the bait and stop, no movement at all for about 2 minutes and it would strike again and this time, it go for the run. This is went John shouted, Strike!!!

Again i gotto feel the fight of a cross breed Tiger Catfish. This fish really fight like a Kurau, fast and powerful.

The monent it reaches the shore, the ‘fish handler’(i forgot his name) would scoop it up with the extra large landing net.

I was amazed by the way they handled the fish at Bangkok. They took extra care during landing and unhooking the fish, unlike some paypond in Malaysia……

The weather was perfect for fishing that day, it was sunny throughout with a little bit of cloud. The water temperature was a warm and i’ve tasted the water, it’s a bit salty but unlike brackish water, it actually tasted like mineral water which indicates the water in that pond if full of minerals. Fishes at this pond already made this pond as their home and with this correct habitat, they breed. I’ve seen many baby fishes swim around the pond and they are growing in a healthy rate. The owner of this pond really took care of his fish.

Earlier on, the Thai Fishing Guide had landed a few pacus, some Red Tails Tiger and Red Tail Cats with his own rod and lure. During bait fishing, we are only allowed to use one rod and this is where John assisted me to get the big ones. He knows all the spot in this pond. He instructed the fish handler to ‘charm’ the correct spot for us to fish. This IT Monster Lake covers an area of 5 acres and has varying depths ranging between 2-6 metres which house many predatory fishes like the araipaima, Arowana, Redtail Tiger, Redtail Catfish, Alligator Gar , Barramundi, Chaophraya Catfish, toman, haruan and featherback species like the belida and many more.

The Thai Fishing Guide would immediately zoom to the rods whenever there’s a slight movement of the mainline. He would use a empty mineral water bottle as an indicator. He would hold the rod and leggo about 2 to 3 meter of mainline and wait for a while before he strike…..

He would wait for about a minute or two, waiting for the fish to make its next move before he would strike.

I told the Thai Fishing Guide to fight this fish because i wanted to see for myself how he handle a fish on my rod. I myself caught a few more Red Tail Cats before we decides to change spot….

At this spot, the fish handler use the Thai Fishing Guide magical bait to charm the spot before we cast our rod into it. As we was chit chatting away with our catches that day, i noticed some movement on my mainline and after a while, the mineral water bottles which act as an indicator, drops. I dash out immediately and reach for the rod. Remembering his instruction, i release about a meter or two of my mainline and waited…..”STTTTTRRRREEEETTTTTTT”, the fish that took my bait makes a run and i strike!!!, It’s a hook on!!! This fish did not fight like all the other fish we caught earlier. It moves slowly in a ‘S’ pattern like a snake. Remember the movie ananconda where one guy fish that giant snake with a monkey, and when hook on, it swirl around in circle of ‘S’. That’s exactly how this fish is moving. I tighten my line and the fish dived, taking about 30m of my mainline…..”Strrreeeeeetttttttttt”, with occasional ‘knocking’ on my line. I pumped this fish slowly and gentle, litfing my rod to a max of 45 degree angle. My short stroke technique managed to turn its head and i retrieved some of my loss line. Suddenly the fish move upwards towards the surface and showed its body and he shouted….Araipaima!!!!!

I fought this fish for about 20 minutes before it decides to give up….

The fish handler jump into the pond and gently hold the araipaima in his extra large landing net maneuvering it towards a special cage specially design for this fish…..

They gently heave the fish up and put it in the special cage…..

sorry for the poor quality photo, this is the only pic i have during the transfer of fish to net

And this is how my dream came true, i finally landed my dreamfish!!! I landed a Araipaima Gigas!!!!!

Fishing at Bangkok, Thailand :- Part 2 – Boon Ma Barramundi Farm

Dam!!! By now i think you guys already know that we’ve underestimated the fish at Boon Ma. We thought it was just like any of those paypond we went to. Wrong!!! The barramundi at Boon Ma are feed with fresh tamban/herring hence the extra ordinary power. They have the power of a wild siakap. With good water irrigation and all, the siakap at Boon Ma come close to a wild siakap fight.

Mike and EK lost 6 barra at the first pond we went to while myself and the Thai Fishing Guide did not get any strike after that. Barra at this pond are huge, well over 8kgs and they are easily ’spooked’. John has warn us about this, he told us that the fishes at this ‘matured pond’ are huge and ’smart’. Actually John has arranged for us to goto the ‘new’ pond where the siakap will hit on anything that moves. The new pond where the siakap are about 4-7kgs and are ‘new fish’ where not many ppl has fished before thus the lack of ‘experience’ and they will whack on anything that moves basically one cast one fish.
We insisted on going to the ‘matured pond’ because we are not looking for quantity, we are looking for quality like those larger siakap at the matured pond. After 6 line snap, the siakap at this matured pond are all spooked and went into hibernation. Total silence.
Not wanting to give up, we keep on casting and casting our lure into this ‘matured pond’ which yield no result. At this time, the Thai Fishing Guide then suggested to us to change pond. He suggested we leave this pond for a while and goto the ‘new pond’ after lunch. Lunch was simple, just a packet of fried rice and that’s well enough for us. Our mind is not on the food that day but as to why we was defeated by the fishes…..Image
We finish our quick lunch and at about 1.30pm we walked to the new pond which is a stone throw away from the matured pond. Mike and EK Wong askedthe Thai Fishing Guide to retie their rig. I insist on using my own rigging and this time i’ll will try the Thailand Handcrafted lure. My rig and knots has caught me many wild siakap/barramundi at Port Klang before hence my confidence in them.

Here’s a peep at what i’ve caught before at Port Klang estuary. A whoopping 24kgs siakap/barramundi….Image
Image
ps:sorry the the bad quality image as this pic was scan from an old ‘film photo’. If anyone knows anybody that can ‘repair’ my old photo, pls do let me know. thanks.

Even with all the experience i have, i can’t believe what has been installed for us for the next 2 hours at this new pond. We was hitting siakap at the rate of one cast one fish as promised by John with the Thailand Handcrafted lure. We are hitting pond siakap that has the power of wild siakap. We caught about 20 siakap in the first hour itself!!! Crazy!!!

For those who has caught a wild siakap before, you surely knows that this fish tends to play dirty like ‘flipping’ the lures out when they are airborne and always charge toward snags if there’s any. The only snag available in that new pond is the ‘feeding platform’ and the water pump and that’s where they will charge. Mike can tell you better about this feeding platform cos one of his siakap actually did managed to dived under the platform and circle around it hence snag!!!

The power of Boon Ma Barramundi!!!

Double hook-up at the ‘new pond’

A good size barra for a happy Mike

Not bad at all, this pond barra has the power of a wild siakap!!!

Finally, he landed one!!!

Nice!!!!!
Image

Another good size barra from Mike, infact most of the barra we landed that day are about this size…..EXCEPT FOR ONE!!!!
Image

Just two hours in the new pond and we have fought more than 20 barras between me and Mike. EK Wong came unprepared and serve him right for landing less than us. He did not listen to John advise hence the lesser catch. Me and Mike was using the Thailand Handcrafted lure while EK was using his own lures. I saw him casting and casting his lure into the new pond without yielding any result. I would purposely walk near him and cast at where he casted his lure and WHAAAAAAAMMMM, strike on my rod. EK would curse SHIIITTT!!! SHIIIIIIIIITTTTT!!!…..and i would laugh till my arse roll on the floor looking at his pity face……hahaha……Image

I did that not once but a couple of time just to prove how effective this Thailand Handcrafted lure. Now i understand why John had insisted us to use this Thai lure and why he said “In case the barras not biting, use this Thai lure”. As a fishing guide myself, i know never-2 argue with the local guide if you wanna catch fish. Listening to the local guide and you might learn something new. You can be a Pro in the place you comes from but once you go to other ppl place, it’s entirely different story altogether. So, listen to the local guide if you wanna catch fish.

Luckily i bought some of my trusty Berkley interlocking swivel to BKK. Mike and EK lost many fish due to swivel breakage. My trusty Berkley swivel has proven itself once again that it can be trusted although it cost a little more compare to other swivel.

This is what Mike were trying to tell you guys about his 80lbs swivel….hehee……Image
Image

EK Wong was still trying his best to lure a barra with his own lures while i was enjoying one cast one fish until my arms cramp. Feeling pity for my good brother, i pass EK the Thailand Handcrafted lure that i was using for one cast one fish. He took it and put it on his rod and true enough, he got a strike on the very first cast!!! But after a few minutes of fight…Image

Aduuuiiiii….how can this happen?????[:o)][:D][:D]
Image

He broke my Thailand Handcrafted lure!!!!!! ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! Why on earth must i borrow my Thai Lure to him????? Noooooooooo…!!!!! But then, he gave me a doggie face look and all was OK, brother ma…..Image
That one lure itself has landed me more than 20 barras in one hour and luckily i bought more than one Thai lure at the local Tackle shop earlier…..Image
I walked back to our hut to get me another Thai lure and i notice my arm was trembling. The whole morning i was lure casting and after that, within one hour, fought more that twenty 4 to 7 kgs barras!!! I thought to myself, “Tonight it’s gonna ache like hell, how to continue fishing tomorrow?” Tomorrow Mike and EK will be going to a local paypond for more barras and toman!!!

It took me much thinking about what i am suppose to do with all the body aching and this dilemma is kinna making me worry. How on earth i can continue fishing in this situation. I can’t concentrate anymore thus i decided to take a rest at our rented hut to clear my mind.
Image

I decided to take things as it goes. It was about 4.30pm now and the matured pond looks calm. I took my rod with the Thailand Handcrafted lure attached to it and cast at it…..and WHHHAAAAAMMMPPP!!!!…something took my lure. Knowing this pond only have huge barras, i cautiously strike and it’s hook on!!! I played to the rhythm of the fish fight pattern. This fish pull and pull till it reaches the other end of the pond and make an quick U turn and heads for the water pump. I uses the short stroke technique to turn its head like ‘riding a horse’. Before it reaches the water pump, i managed to turn its’ charging path towards the clear area. I can feel the strength of this fish as it pull my line to where it wanted to go. Then, it this barra swim towards the ‘feeding platform’ and i pump the bugger back and it gave a aerobatic jump!!! WoW, it was huge!!!
Image

With my aching arms, i fought this barra till it was totally exhausted . It took me a good 15 minutes to land this momma siakap!!! It weight at the boga grip a good 10 kgs!!! I am totally bashed by this fish and i know it was a good fight!!! Kudos to Boon Ma barras!!! All of us shared the moment of joy and took a group photo together with this momma siakap and ended our fishing day at Boon Ma. We headed back to our hotel and had a lovely Thai dinner with Mike family and EK Wong’s business partner at the restaurant nearby our hotel.

Image

After much thought, i’ve decided to rest one day and continue on the next day at IT Monster lake while Mike and EK would goto the local paypond. From what i’ve heard, Mike and EK had about 8 barras each that day before Mike ended the day with a treble hook hooked on his hand. John rush him to the nearest hospital where 6 preety nurses attended to him.

Before Mike and EK headed to the local paypond, John had arrange for me to stay at another hotel at Rachada. While Mike and EK Wong was at the local paypond, i took the opportunity to visit a local massage parlour at RCA. The therapist at this massage parlour gave me an intensive 4 hour massage that heals my aching body. After the massage, i travel back to Rachada where my hotel is located and this is where i had the best dinner ever in my life.
I went to the street market at Rachada to have my dinner. The street was bustling with hawkers at both side of the road. The aroma of all the delicious Thai food makes me awaken and refreshen up 100% again….Image

And guess what did i had for dinner at Rachada?????

Yeap, i had the best dinner in my life at this Rachada street market. Mike and EK Wong prolly on their way home to KL by now as their flight back to KL was 8.30pm BKK time. I was alone traveling along the Rachada street market when i stumbled upon ‘this’ which reminds me of the Thai Fishing Guide posting once….i remembered he mentioned this once, “By eating ‘this’, you will have extra energy and power”…..

This is what i had for dinner at Rachada!!!!!

The Attack of the Creepy Crawlies!!!!

One bite on this babies and your energy level will zoom to 110%!!!

Some says better than Viagra!!!

Besides those creepy crawlies, i also had….

Thai BBQ Herbal Haruan

According to the Thais, the best part of this herbal haruan is at the guts. That’s why this fish comes with its guts and all….wooalalaaa!!!

I also had fresh oyster…..

And this is the ‘dip’ for Thai fresh oyster….*slurrppss*…….

In one gulp, i swallow!!!…*guuuulp*…….

All wash down with couple bottles of Singha….

After the lovely dinner, i headed back to my hotel and sleep. This are the places i did NOT go…..muahahahaaa……..

…to be continue….*NEXT :- IT MONSTER LAKE where ULTRAMAN DEFEATED DRAGON!!!*
