Hi there,

Great blog with lots of useful info.

But as an Australian angler, with extensive overseas fishing experience, I am unsure about the best time to fish Malaysia. I can find little about the best time of the year (months/ seasons) to target particular species.

I am planning to visit in June. Is that a good month?

Perhaps you could write about the best months to try and catch particular species.

Are there months to avoid, because of the weather (rain, floods and so on), or because the fish are hard to catch then?

Keep up the good work. :-)

Hi Walter,

The easiest way is to contact Belum Rainforest Resort which is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. They can arrange for your fishing expedition - without hassles.

I am not promoting them, but I think its the easiest way of having your accommodation and fishing trip sorted without problems.

I have been there a few times before, and the place is FAR away from the tourist traps of Kuala Lumpur.

The upper reaches of the Belum is restricted and you need to arrange for a permit from the ranger's office - this can also be arranged by the resort.

The large expanse of water has numerous fishing spots, including many river systems.

The lures that are effective are deep & shallow runners like the shad rap and top water plugs. These are effective for the Channa (Toman as the locals call it).

For the Hampala Barb (Jungle Perch), orange is the most effective color.

Hope this info aids you in your quest for our 'Toman'.

Cheers and tight lines.

Guys, exciting stuff about this Snakehead fishing...

Will be in Malaysia from mid-December until 1st week Januari and would love to fish for Toman/Channa, or maybe Jungle Perch, but do not know how to arrange a trip for let's say 4 or 5 days...

Getting there I will always manage but any good advise on arranged fishing trips?
That way I can escape the dreaded 'mandatory' shopping trips in KL as well.

Tight lines, amigos and I hope for some advice, alright?
